The Social Protection, Governance and Tripartism Programme (SPGT) aims at disseminating knowledge and good practices worldwide. It contributes to institutional capacity building by providing training courses and other learning events, both in Turin and in various other regions, for ILO constituents, staff from UN agencies and other development partners and stakeholders.

The Programme provides training both in Turin and in field destinations. New training methods, including web-based distance learning, are applied extensively.

Functional responsibilities


The internship provides the opportunity to gain experience in a leading training provider in the field of social protection. Through interaction with both participants (mainly social protection practitioners from low- and middle-income countries) and expert resource persons, the intern will gain exposure to some of the latest technical discussions in the field and the realities on the ground. In the meantime, the intern will gain experience of innovative training methodologies, through active participation in the development of training materials and facilitation of courses.

The intern will become familiar with cross-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment of an international organization, learning skills of teamwork, organization of work and priority setting the work. Working in the ITCILO, the intern will become familiar with the tripartite structure of the ILO and its worldwide structure, all while the organization celebrates its centenary.

Training will be offered through a series of one-to-one and group coaching on the technical areas covered by the Programme. Interns are encouraged to participate in ITC-ILO workshops and internal training courses. When appropriate, interns may participate in training courses offered by SPGT or other technical programmes of the Centre.


Under the general supervision of the Programme Officer, the intern will provide contribution towards the continuous updating and refinement of the training and participate in the implementation of its activities. Specifically the intern will take part in:

  • Development and management of E-Learning platforms, which support the three phases of training activities at the ITCILO (pre-course, residential and post-course);
  • Preparation of training material and technical tools training activities, including pre-course learning (reading, multimedia etc), assessment tools and interactive exercises;
  • Facilitation of training activities including design and management of group work and interactive exercises; 
  • Marketing and promotion of training activities to potential donors and recipients;
  • Design, planning, promotion, coordination, management and evaluation of training activities; 
  • Conceptualization and research work related to new course offerings;
  • Adaptation of training material to economic, social, cultural context in each region of the world.

Qualifications required


The intern must be enrolled on an undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate programme, preferably approaching the end of that programme.
Academic courses related to the internship tasks such as training, e-learning, social policy, economy, health, international relations, economics, public administration, project management and political sciences is desirable as well as working experience in the design, implementation and evaluation of training activities.


Fluency in English and preferably working knowledge of another language of ITCILO (French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian or Italian)

IT Skills

Knowledge of web-development programmes and E-Learning programme would be an advantage.
